Story: The story of Ted is about a young boy with no friends who gets a teddy bear (whom he names Teddy) for Christmas. He makes a wish and the next day, Teddy comes to life. The bear becomes famous for magically coming to life, and then eventually the fame putters to a halt and he becomes a washed up has-been. Sort of like Scott Baio. Honestly, does anyone know what he's up to these days?
And throughout all of this, the young boy (John) was always Ted's best friend. Eventually, they grow up. John (played by Mark Wahlberg) has become 35 years old, living with his girlfriend of 4 years (played by Mila Kunis), and Ted (voiced by Seth MacFarlane)...is still a teddy bear. A washed up, old, perverted, weed smoking teddy bear.
Honestly, the story is pretty average, in that it's something that's been done before. A man has trouble growing up, girlfriend needs reassurance of a future and maturity, they fight and have issues, and then something happens, and everything works out. No, that was not a spoiler, it was just a summary of every story ever.
That being said, it's not a BAD re-telling of the story we've grown accustomed to hearing and watching. It doesn't make you groan with annoyance.
Writing: Make no mistakes about it, this movie is HILARIOUS. There are so many jokes and off the cuff remarks. There are some absolutely hilarious scenes that you will laugh so hard that you cry. Like the fight scene. The amazing, hilarious fight scene. For fear of spoilers, I'll jump to another thought.
It is written a bit like Family Guy, since it's written by the creator of Family Guy. But it plays out a bit differently. The jokes are more constant and vulgar. This may actually be a point of problems for the average movie goer. But, you come into this movie knowing that it's rated R, and it isn't a kids movie. So, that's on you. Besides, if you buy a ticket and leave, that's your problem. Seth already has your sweet, sweet money.
The jokes are actually pretty witty. Always making fun of someone or something. And if you like jokes that are off-the-wall, then this is the movie for you. But as I said up there, it is a pretty vulgar movie. F-words abound. So don't bring your children.
Characters: Ted (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) is a really good character. He's hilarious. It shows how he goes from being a child's toy and best friend to being a drug-addict with a penchant for hookers. He is a rough around the edges teddy bear. You know, like Keith Richards, with more hair. He eventually matures and grows up. D'aw.
John (Wahlberg) is an average man in a dead end job. His girlfriend (Kunis) wants him to grow up and mature, but he can't because his teddy bear still lives with him. He skips work to get stoned and his girlfriend is on the brink of breaking up with him because she needs a man. Luckily, everything works out in the end, and like all movies, he grows up as well.
Everybody is an average character, but what makes this movie work is the interactions and chemistry that Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, and Seth MacFarlane have together. The actors/actress compliment each other so well, and that allows you to focus on the comedy.
Summary: This movie is brilliant. Maybe not the most visually stunning movie. Or original. But it does take a genre that is over-saturated and makes it new again. But parents, don't take your children to see it. And if you're easily offended, don't go see this yourself. To everyone else, enjoy.
